OpenAI says Codex and ChatGPT Work reach 8 million active users
OpenAI said Codex and ChatGPT Work reached 8 million active users as GPT 5.6 Sol demand surged, prompting another usage limit reset.
OpenAI said Codex and ChatGPT Work have reached 8 million active users as rapid adoption of GPT-5.6 Sol places growing pressure on the company’s computing infrastructure.
The company reset usage limits for all users and said it would continue operating without the five hour rate limit, giving users more access to GPT-5.6 Sol across Codex and ChatGPT Work.
“We have reached 8M active users across Codex and ChatGPT Work,” OpenAI’s Tibo said. “We are once again resetting the usage limits for all.”
The milestone comes shortly after OpenAI reported that more than 5 million people were using Codex each week, including more than 1 million people using the product for work outside software development.
OpenAI launched GPT-5.6 across ChatGPT, Codex and its API last week. Sol is the flagship model in the new family, alongside the lower cost Terra model and the faster Luna model.
ChatGPT Work uses GPT-5.6 to complete professional tasks across connected tools, including research, data analysis, documents, presentations and spreadsheets. The product is available on desktop and is rolling out across supported ChatGPT plans on web and mobile.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said demand for GPT-5.6 Sol had grown rapidly and credited the company’s inference team with expanding capacity to support the increase.
“5.6 Sol growth is insane,” Altman said. “We are going to move mountains to continue to scale, but it is possible there are some hiccups soon.”
The warning suggests users could experience temporary capacity issues as OpenAI adds infrastructure to meet demand for the model.
GPT-5.6 Sol is available to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users across ChatGPT Work and Codex. OpenAI also offers higher reasoning settings for complex tasks, including max and ultra modes on eligible plans.
