Coinbase brings trading and payments to AI agents
The new product lets users connect AI agents to Coinbase accounts for trading, payments, and portfolio workflows.
Coinbase launched Coinbase for Agents, a new product that lets users connect AI agents directly to their Coinbase accounts so the agents can trade, make payments, and execute financial workflows within user defined limits.
The product is available starting today as an MCP and command line interface, according to Coinbase. The company said the tool is designed to let AI agents move beyond financial research and into execution, giving them access to trading and spending functions once a user grants permission.
Coinbase said users can ask an agent to rebalance a portfolio, set limit orders, monitor idle cash, pay for data services, or run recurring crypto purchases based on preset instructions.
Spot and derivatives crypto trading are available today, while Coinbase said it plans to expand capabilities to stocks, index funds, prediction markets, and commodities.
The launch marks Coinbase’s latest push into agentic finance, where AI systems operate across apps and financial services on behalf of users. The company said Coinbase for Agents can operate inside an isolated portfolio or through a user’s main Coinbase account, with access restricted to what the user allows.
The company said additional controls are coming soon, including maximum trade sizes, spending limits, and rules around which assets or services an agent can interact with.
Coinbase said compliance checks are built into the product, with payments subject to the same transaction monitoring and know your transaction controls that power the broader Coinbase platform.
The product also builds on Coinbase’s earlier AI and payments work. Coinbase launched AgentKit in 2024 to help developers give wallets to AI agents, followed by x402, an agentic payments protocol. Coinbase for Agents brings those capabilities closer to consumer accounts by letting users connect agents to Coinbase directly.
The company is offering two access paths. MCP is designed for web based agent platforms such as ChatGPT and Claude, while the CLI version is aimed at terminal based environments such as Claude Code, Codex, and OpenClaw.
Coinbase said it also integrated an in app agent called Coinbase Advisor, which provides recommendations and guidance directly to users. The company described the launch as part of a broader consumer agentic suite that spans investors, autonomous agents, and businesses accepting agentic payments.
