The Sky Blues returned to the CBS Arena as a top-flight club for the first time since 2001, facing a Hull side fresh off a shock win over Manchester United.
Coventry City played a Premier League match at home on August 29, 2026. That sentence, by itself, would have sounded absurd for the better part of two and a half decades.
The last time Coventry hosted a top-flight fixture was May 5, 2001.
A quarter-century in the making
The CBS Arena, which Coventry purchased in 2025, hosted its inaugural Premier League match as the club’s own property.
Both Coventry and Hull City earned their spots in the top flight by finishing in the Championship’s automatic promotion places in April 2026.

Their opening-day results, however, told very different stories. Coventry traveled to Arsenal for their first match back and came away with a 3-0 defeat on August 21, 2026. Hull, meanwhile, pulled off one of the early-season shockers by beating Manchester United 2-0.
The weight of history
These two clubs have met 53 times across all competitions. Hull holds the edge with 21 wins to Coventry’s 18.
The club’s relegation from the Premier League in 2001 triggered a downward spiral that at various points saw them drop as low as League Two, English football’s fourth tier.
