DekaBank has taken its first stake in Strategy, the company better known for owning Bitcoin than for making software. The German asset manager disclosed a purchase of 104,921 Strategy shares worth $15.2 million.

For a lender majority-owned by German savings banks, that is a notable move. Sparkassen-linked institutions are not usually the first name that comes to mind when you think “Bitcoin proxy trade.”

What DekaBank bought

The position covers 104,921 shares of Strategy Inc., which trades on the Nasdaq under the ticker MSTR. The stake is valued at approximately $15.2 million.

That works out to a purchase price of approximately $145 per share. It is also the first reported position DekaBank has held in the company.

DekaBank is described in the research as Germany’s fourth-largest asset manager. It manages tens of billions in assets.

The disclosure lands shortly after DekaBank rolled out a retail crypto product. Branded “Krypto – powered by Deka,” the service launched on October 19, 2026.

It lets customers buy and sell digital assets directly through their banking apps. The supported list includes Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, XRP, and Polygon’s POL.

So the same institution now offers clients direct crypto access while holding an equity bet on the largest corporate Bitcoin holder. That is a two-track approach to the same asset class.

Why Strategy is the go-to proxy

Strategy, formerly MicroStrategy, holds the largest Bitcoin treasury of any public company. As of October 2026, it held 848,517 BTC.

The company has also leaned into new ways of describing itself. One metric it uses is “net Bitcoin per share,” designed to show how much Bitcoin backs each share after accounting for its capital structure.

DekaBank is not alone in going this route. Deutsche Bank and Belgium’s KBC Group have also reported increasing their stakes in Strategy.

The pattern points to European financial institutions choosing equity exposure over holding Bitcoin outright. Shares fit neatly into existing custody arrangements, compliance processes, and reporting systems.

Owning a stock listed on Nasdaq requires no new wallet infrastructure or private key management. For a regulated bank, that convenience is a feature, not a footnote.

What this means for banks and Bitcoin exposure

An equity stake in Strategy is not identical to holding Bitcoin. Shareholders take on company-specific factors, including how Strategy funds its purchases and how its share price moves relative to the value of its holdings. Metrics like net Bitcoin per share exist precisely because that relationship is not always straightforward.

For DekaBank specifically, the timing is interesting. The stake arrives alongside the retail crypto launch, suggesting the institution is building familiarity with the asset class from more than one direction.

One track serves customers who want to buy coins themselves. The other gives the asset manager its own indirect exposure through a regulated, exchange-listed security.
