Ethena Labs, the team behind the synthetic dollar USDe, said it is aware of a potential security incident involving Binance. The alert came on October 29, 2026.
Ethena said its exchange-exposed collateral is kept with off-exchange custodians, not parked on the exchange itself.
Neither the nature nor the scope of the possible incident at Binance has been disclosed. Ethena’s message focused on where its money is.
What Ethena said, and what it means for USDe
Ethena indicated that USDe’s core functions remain unaffected. That covers minting, redemption and the collateral backing the token.
The company works with Off-Exchange Settlement providers, known as OES, including Copper and Ceffu.
These custodians hold and manage USDe’s backing assets without handing ownership over to the exchange. The exchange gets to see the collateral and extend trading credit against it. It does not get to hold the keys.
Why Ethena touches exchanges at all
USDe is not backed by dollars in a bank account. It maintains its value through delta-neutral hedging, mostly using perpetual futures on centralized trading venues.

Perpetual futures are derivatives contracts with no expiry date, and centralized exchanges like Binance are where much of that trading happens.
So Ethena needs exchanges for hedging, but it does not need to leave its collateral sitting on them. The OES setup is designed to let the company do the first without the second.
The custody model gets a real-world test
The design goal is that if an exchange fails, the collateral stays protected and can be accessed independently of whatever is going wrong at the venue.
Monthly custodian attestations and on-chain dashboards have consistently shown backing assets held in institutional custody, away from exchanges.
The timing of the alert adds some texture. It arrives as Binance has been broadening its product menu, including equity perpetuals and tokenized stocks. There is no indication in the available material that the potential incident is linked to those new offerings.
What this means for holders and the broader market
For USDe holders, the immediate takeaway is that Ethena is pointing to its custody structure as a buffer. If the company’s account of its setup holds, a problem at Binance should not directly touch the assets backing the token.
Ethena still relies on exchanges like Binance for hedging. Even with collateral held elsewhere, disruption at a major venue could complicate the hedging side of the operation, which is the part that keeps the peg steady. The source material does not say this has happened.
Ethena’s response acknowledges the possible problem, names the safeguard, and points to ongoing transparency. Whether that confidence is fully warranted depends on facts about the Binance situation that have not yet been made public.
For now, Ethena has made its position clear. The collateral is off-exchange, the token is operating, and the incident remains, in the company’s own framing, potential.
