UEFA, AFC and CONCACAF weigh no-confidence vote against Infantino
Regional soccer powers oppose the FIFA president’s abandoned plan to sell a stake in World Cup commercial rights, but fear a failed challenge could strengthen him.
UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF are discussing a no-confidence vote to remove FIFA President Gianni Infantino, according to senior figures familiar with the talks.
The regional bodies oppose Infantino’s proposal to sell a minority stake in a private FIFA commercial entity that would control World Cup rights. FIFA’s leadership said it would not support any election process inconsistent with its statutes and governance framework.
Infantino intends to seek reelection at the March 2027 FIFA Congress and retains support from several member associations, including in Africa. Opponents fear a failed no-confidence challenge would demonstrate his electoral backing and strengthen his position.
FIFA’s statutes allow the Council to convene an Extraordinary Congress, or require one if at least one-fifth of its 211 member associations submit a written request. The statutes do not specifically address a no-confidence vote.
