About Berachain
Berachain is an EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain built on the Cosmos SDK, designed as a DeFi-focused smart-contract platform that ties network security to liquidity provision. It was conceived in late 2021 by four pseudonymous co-founders known as Smokey the Bera, Papa Bear, Homme Bera, and Dev Bear, who came out of the OlympusDAO and broader DeFi community. The Berachain mainnet and tradable BERA token launched in February 2025, with initial market activity reported around February 6, 2025. The chain uses Proof-of-Liquidity as its consensus mechanism. Validators stake BERA, and block production probability is proportional to the amount of BERA staked. Block rewards are emitted as WBERA, while governance is handled through a separate token, BGT. BERA is the gas and staking token. It is used to pay transaction fees and staked by validators to secure the network and participate in consensus. Berachain also supports Ethereum-style smart contracts, a native stablecoin called HONEY, and other DeFi protocols within its EVM-identical environment. BERA launched with a genesis supply of 500 million tokens, has no fixed maximum supply, and follows an inflationary issuance model with circulating supply increasing over time through ongoing emissions.
