About Monero
Monero is an open-source cryptocurrency designed for private, fungible peer-to-peer payments. Transaction details are confidential by default and resistant to censorship. It launched in April 2014 as a fork of Bytecoin, with early development attributed to the Bitcointalk user thankful_for_today. The underlying privacy protocol traces to the pseudonymous Nicolas van Saberhagen. The network uses proof-of-work consensus through the RandomX algorithm, which is designed to run efficiently on general-purpose consumer hardware. Privacy is enforced at the protocol level through ring signatures, stealth addresses, and confidential transactions, which together obscure the sender, recipient, and amount in every transaction. The native token, XMR, is used to pay transaction fees and as the unit of value transferred on the network. Monero has no fixed supply cap. After its main emission curve concluded, the protocol switched to a permanent tail emission of 0.6 XMR per block, so total supply increases indefinitely at a low, predictable rate. Monero is one of the most widely used privacy-focused cryptocurrencies and is primarily associated with censorship-resistant payments.
