About Basic Attention

Basic Attention Token (BAT) is a blockchain-based digital advertising system that tracks and rewards user attention, transferring value between advertisers, publishers, and users. It is primarily integrated with the Brave browser, which is the main interface for the ecosystem. Brendan Eich, the inventor of JavaScript and co-founder of Mozilla and Firefox, created the project under Brave Software. BAT and Brave were conceived around 2016 to 2017. The token sale took place on May 31, 2017, raising approximately $35 million in ETH. BAT is an ERC-20 token built on Ethereum and has since been bridged to Solana as an SPL token. It relies on the consensus mechanisms of those networks rather than operating its own blockchain. The BAT token is used by advertisers to fund ad campaigns. Users who opt in to Brave Rewards receive BAT as compensation for viewing privacy-respecting ads. Audiences can also use BAT to tip or support publishers and content creators directly. BAT has a fixed maximum supply of 1.5 billion tokens, with virtually all tokens already in circulation and no ongoing issuance or mining. It functions as a utility token within a closed digital advertising marketplace rather than as a fee or governance instrument.
