The Flare-based cover protocol now backs Kraken's Protected Strategies USDC vault, with payouts handled by Sentora rather than guaranteed by Kraken
Firelight has added $31M of cover to Kraken’s Protected Strategies USDC vault. That gives depositors a backstop if the underlying DeFi plumbing springs a leak.
The coverage went live on October 15, 2026. It arrives just nine days after Firelight itself launched.
How the coverage works
The vault is curated by Sentora, which routes deposits into what it describes as blue-chip DeFi venues. Firelight’s cover sits on top as a second layer of protection.
Each depositor address is capped at $100,000 of coverage per coverage period.
The policy targets specific technical failures. Covered events include smart contract exploits and oracle failures. Oracles are the data feeds that tell onchain programs what prices are. When they break, a protocol can make very confident decisions based on very wrong numbers.
Coverage terms are established and verified onchain every 30 days, so the parameters can be adjusted as the vault’s risk profile shifts.
Payouts are handled by Sentora, not guaranteed by Kraken. Depositors are not getting a promise from the exchange’s balance sheet. They are relying on the cover structure that Firelight and Sentora have built around the product.

Who decides when a claim pays out
A consortium of five independent firms validates each claim. At least three of the five must vote in favor before a payout is activated.
Once a claim clears, funds come from a shared, non-custodial pool made up of staked FXRP alongside a protocol-owned first-loss buffer.
FXRP is a representation of XRP that operates on the Flare Network, where Firelight is built. Stakers who put FXRP into the pool effectively act as underwriters. The first-loss buffer is capital the protocol itself owns, and it absorbs losses before stakers’ funds are touched.
Background: a fast start for Firelight
Firelight launched on October 6, 2026, on the Flare Network. Its first product covered the USD Protected Vault. The protocol has also raised $8 million in seed funding.
Sentora’s total value locked across its strategies exceeds $2.8 billion, with significant deposits sitting in Kraken’s DeFi Earn products. Against that $2.8 billion figure, the $31M of cover is a modest slice.
What this means for depositors and DeFi yield
The $100,000 per-address limit means larger holders remain partly exposed. Coverage only applies to listed events, so losses from other causes may fall outside the policy. Payouts are not guaranteed by Kraken, so depositors are trusting the strength of the FXRP pool and the judgment of the five-firm consortium.
Backing a USDC vault with staked FXRP means the cover is denominated in a different asset than the deposits it protects. If FXRP’s value fell sharply at the same moment a large claim landed, the pool’s capacity could look thinner than it does on paper. The protocol-owned first-loss buffer is designed to soften that kind of hit.
