The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) has directed GitHub to take down three repositories associated with Bitchat, a decentralized messaging application developed by Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Block.

The order, revealed by Dorsey on Friday, targets the main Bitchat repository, its Android repository, and the Android release page.

Bitchat is a privacy-focused messaging platform built to let users communicate securely through decentralized Bluetooth mesh networks without accounts, centralized infrastructure or internet connectivity, serving as a fallback during network disruptions, emergencies and government-imposed internet blackouts.

I4C said these design features make the platform resistant to lawful interception and hinder efforts to identify users or investigate communications.

Officials stated that the platform could be misused by anti-national actors, terrorist organizations, organized criminal groups, cybercriminals, and others to communicate anonymously, evade surveillance, circumvent internet shutdowns and lawful restrictions, and coordinate unlawful activities.

The notice specifically references risks including riots, violent protests, misinformation, radicalization, criminal conspiracies, terrorism, and threats to India’s sovereignty, national security, and public order.
