Iran vows to retaliate after US widens sanctions
Tehran threatened economic and military retaliation as Washington warned trading partners to sever ties or risk exclusion from the dollar system.
Iran vowed to retaliate after the United States expanded economic sanctions that Washington said would target the country’s financial lifeline, Reuters reported.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said countries that continue trading with Iran could be pushed out of the dollar-based financial system. The Treasury separately sanctioned 60 individuals, entities, and vessels but did not name the Chinese financial institutions suspected of facilitating Iran’s oil trade.
Iranian Economy Minister Ali Madanizadeh said Tehran was prepared for the measures and warned that Iran had tools of its own. An Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps spokesperson also threatened US interests and energy chokepoints if Iranian infrastructure is attacked.
China said sanctions and pressure tactics would not help and that Beijing would protect its interests. Reuters reported that the measures come as Washington seeks to disrupt Iranian attacks on ships and pressure Tehran toward a diplomatic solution.
