Jane Street posts roughly $15 billion July loss after AI market turmoil
The trading firm disclosed the July loss to lenders while completing a $14.6 billion private debt deal led by JPMorgan.
Jane Street posted a roughly $15 billion loss in July after volatility in AI stocks and losses tied to hedge fund Situational Awareness hit the trading firm, according to the Financial Times.
The New York based firm disclosed the loss to lenders as part of a $14.6 billion private debt transaction led by JPMorgan that shifted its roughly $11 billion public debt pile to a smaller group of private investors including Pimco.
The loss marks a rare setback for Jane Street, which has generated more than $40 billion in net trading revenue so far this year even after accounting for the July decline. That already exceeds the roughly $40 billion in revenue it generated during all of 2025.
July brought a sharp reversal across US AI stocks following a strong rally earlier in 2026. The selloff also hit several funds concentrated in the sector, including Leopold Aschenbrenner’s Situational Awareness, in which Jane Street was an investor.
Situational Awareness had placed concentrated and heavily leveraged bets on AI stocks. As those positions moved against the fund, it sold its public equity portfolio to Citadel.

Jane Street’s investment in Situational Awareness was unusual because the trading firm primarily deploys its own capital.
The July loss will be reflected in Jane Street’s third quarter results, which remain in progress.
Before the drawdown, Jane Street had been posting record results. The firm generated $16.1 billion in net trading revenue during the first quarter, significantly exceeding comparable trading revenue at major Wall Street banks.
The private debt transaction will also reduce the number of investors receiving regular financial disclosures from Jane Street as the firm moves away from public debt markets.
Jane Street was founded in 2000 and operates across equities, bonds, exchange traded funds and other markets. It has also expanded into longer term investments, including positions in AI company Anthropic and data center operator CoreWeave.
