Manchester United is reportedly dangling Marcus Rashford as trade bait to pry French midfielder Manu Kone away from AS Roma, in what would be one of the more creative swap deals of the summer transfer window. Roma has slapped a price tag of roughly £51M (€60M) on Kone, and United apparently thinks packaging Rashford into the deal could bridge the gap.

Here’s the thing: Rashford’s €11M net annual salary makes this far messier than a simple player exchange.

The swap proposal first surfaced around July 25, 2026, with Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport among the first to report on the exploratory talks. As of July 31, no finalized agreement has been reached, and no cash incentives or additional sweeteners have been confirmed.

Kone, for his part, appears open to the idea of moving to Old Trafford. Interest from other clubs adds competitive pressure, but the French international’s willingness to join United is at least one variable working in the English club’s favor.

Roma, however, isn’t exactly rushing to the negotiating table with open arms. The Serie A side has shown reluctance to budge on their €60M asking price, which creates a fundamental tension. United presumably values the Rashford component of the swap at a figure that would meaningfully offset that price tag, but Roma may not see it the same way, especially when Rashford’s salary obligations come attached.

Rashford’s situation at United has been complicated, to put it mildly. The forward spent last season on loan at Barcelona, a move that signaled his diminished standing at the club where he came through the academy. Now he’s back, and United appears more interested in using him as a bargaining chip than reintegrating him into the first team.

Several factors will determine whether this deal crosses the finish line. First, United’s willingness to subsidize a portion of Rashford’s wages could be the key that unlocks the entire negotiation. Second, competing interest in Kone matters. If another club willing to pay closer to the €60M asking price in straight cash enters the picture, United’s swap proposal becomes significantly less attractive to Roma.
