About Cosmos Hub
Cosmos Hub is the first proof-of-stake blockchain in the Cosmos ecosystem. It functions as a central hub connecting independent blockchains, called zones, so they can communicate with each other. Jae Kwon and Ethan Buchman started the project, with development led by Tendermint Inc and the Interchain Foundation. The mainnet launched on 13 March 2019. Cosmos Hub uses Tendermint BFT delegated proof-of-stake consensus. Validators stake ATOM, propose and vote on blocks, and achieve fast finality within a Byzantine fault-tolerant framework. The native token, ATOM, has three main uses: paying transaction fees, staking or delegating to validators to secure the network and earn rewards, and voting on on-chain governance proposals. Cosmos Hub also provides interchain security, where selected consumer chains are secured by ATOM-backed staking on the Hub. ATOM has no fixed maximum supply and follows an inflationary issuance model. Its circulating supply was roughly 528 to 530 million tokens as of 2026.
