About Arbitrum
Arbitrum is an Ethereum Layer 2 optimistic rollup network designed to increase transaction throughput and reduce fees for Ethereum-based applications. Its main chains are Arbitrum One and Arbitrum Nova. Offchain Labs, founded by Ed Felten, Steven Goldfeder, and Harry Kalodner, developed the network, which launched on mainnet in 2021. Arbitrum's optimistic rollup design executes transactions off-chain, batches them, and posts them to Ethereum. Security is enforced through an interactive fraud-proof protocol. The Nitro upgrade later refined this architecture. The native governance token, ARB, is an ERC-20 token distributed via airdrop on March 23, 2023. Holders can vote, delegate, elect a Security Council, and direct treasury allocation through the Arbitrum DAO. ARB is not used to pay gas fees; gas on Arbitrum chains is denominated in ETH. The initial total supply of ARB is 10 billion tokens. Protocol rules permit up to 2 percent annual minting beyond that figure, though no additional tokens had been minted as of mid-2026. Arbitrum is one of the most widely used Ethereum scaling platforms, with applications spanning decentralized finance, gaming, and social apps that need higher throughput and lower costs than Ethereum's base layer provides.
