About Degen
Degen is a community-created social reward and tipping token built around the Farcaster decentralized social network. It originated as a tipping currency in the Farcaster /degen channel before expanding into the native gas token of Degen Chain, a Layer-3 blockchain built on Base using Arbitrum Orbit technology. The project was created by a small community team led by Jacek Trociński, known on Farcaster simply as Jacek, and emerged in early 2024. The DEGEN token launched on Base in January 2024 through a series of community airdrops distributed to active Farcaster /degen channel participants. Allocations were determined by Degen points earned through likes, reposts, posts, followers, and certain NFT holdings. DEGEN is an ERC-20 token on the Base Layer-2 network. Degen Chain is a Layer-3 Arbitrum Orbit chain that settles through Base and relies on the underlying Ethereum rollup security model rather than an independent consensus mechanism. The DEGEN token has three primary functions: tipping and rewarding content creators on Farcaster and apps such as Warpcast, paying transaction fees on Degen Chain, and participating in community ecosystem incentives and liquidity rewards. There was no presale and no venture capital allocation. The project launched with a fixed initial supply of 37 billion tokens. Degen is a community-driven experiment in translating social engagement on a decentralized network into on-chain economic value.
