About Celestia

Celestia is a modular blockchain network that provides data availability and consensus for other blockchains and rollups instead of executing smart contracts itself. Mustafa Al-Bassam, Ismail Khoffi, and John Adler co-founded the project after years of prior research. The mainnet and native token launched on October 31, 2023, with a genesis airdrop for early participants. Celestia uses a Tendermint-based proof-of-stake consensus combined with data availability sampling. Validators stake TIA to produce blocks, and light nodes verify data availability by sampling small portions of each block without downloading it in full. The native token, TIA, is used to pay for blobspace and gas fees on Celestia-based rollups, to stake and secure the network as a validator or delegator, and to vote on on-chain governance proposals. Celestia launched with a genesis supply of one billion TIA and follows an uncapped inflationary issuance model, with new tokens distributed through ongoing proof-of-stake rewards. Other chains and rollups use Celestia as a shared data-availability layer, offloading their data publication to Celestia rather than handling it on their own execution layer.
