About Hedera
Hedera is a public distributed ledger whose native token, HBAR, pays for network fees and services such as smart contracts, consensus, and token issuance. It is aimed at decentralized applications and enterprise use. Leemon Baird and Mance Harmon founded the project around 2017, and the network reached the public over 2018 and 2019. Instead of a traditional blockchain, Hedera uses hashgraph consensus, which it describes as a proof of stake public network where HBAR is staked to help secure it. The supply is fixed at a maximum of 50 billion HBAR, with the full amount minted at launch. HBAR plays two main roles: paying for network activity and helping secure consensus.
