About Linea
Linea is an Ethereum layer-2 zkEVM rollup built by Consensys to reduce transaction costs and increase throughput on Ethereum while maintaining compatibility with the Ethereum Virtual Machine. Consensys incubated the network, which launched its mainnet in August 2023. Linea uses a zero-knowledge rollup design: transactions execute off-chain, and compressed data with validity proofs are posted to Ethereum for security. ETH is the gas token for transaction fees on the network. The native token, LINEA, is not used for gas or governance. Instead, it is allocated toward ecosystem incentives, user rewards, and funding builders and public goods through an Ecosystem Fund. A buyback-and-burn mechanism applies to a portion of transaction fees. LINEA has a fixed total supply of 72,009,990,000 tokens. Of that, 85 percent goes to the ecosystem and community, and 15 percent goes to the Consensys treasury. The supply is non-inflationary. Linea is a general-purpose scaling environment for Ethereum applications, and LINEA exists primarily to coordinate ecosystem incentives rather than function as a transactional currency.
