About Nillion

Nillion is a decentralized network for privacy-preserving computation and data storage, allowing operations on sensitive data without exposing the underlying information. Andrew Masanto, who also co-founded Hedera Hashgraph and Reserve, founded the project in November 2021. The founding team includes Conrad Whelan, Slava Rubin, and chief scientist Dr. Miguel de Vega. The NIL token generation event occurred around March 25, 2025, starting the token's vesting and unlock schedule. Nillion does not use a traditional blockchain. Instead, it runs on a non-blockchain architecture built around a cryptographic primitive called Nil Message Compute, which splits and distributes data across nodes so that computation happens without any single node seeing the raw information. The network is not secured by proof-of-work or proof-of-stake consensus but by this distributed cryptographic computation model. The native token, NIL, is used to pay for privacy-preserving compute and storage services on the network and to participate in governance. NIL has a hard-capped total supply of one billion tokens, allocated across community, ecosystem, protocol development, early backers, and core contributors, with a multi-year vesting schedule. The network is designed for applications that need to process sensitive data without revealing it to any single party.
