About Starknet
Starknet is an Ethereum Layer 2 network that works as a validity rollup, using STARK proofs to verify state updates and scale Ethereum transactions at lower cost. It was developed by StarkWare, a company founded in 2018 by Eli Ben-Sasson, Uri Kolodny, Michael Riabzev, and Alessandro Chiesa. The Starknet mainnet launched in 2021. Its native token, STRK, was created in May 2022 and minted on-chain on 30 November 2022. The core design relies on STARK-based validity proving: cryptographic proofs confirm the integrity of state transitions without requiring every Ethereum node to re-execute each transaction. STRK is used to pay transaction fees, participate in staking, and vote on governance proposals. The total supply is capped at 10 billion tokens, the amount established at genesis, with no mechanism to mint additional tokens beyond that limit.
