About The Graph
The Graph is an open-source, decentralized indexing and querying protocol that organizes and retrieves blockchain data from networks like Ethereum and IPFS. Yaniv Tal, Brandon Ramirez, and Jannis Pohlmann founded the project in 2018, and the decentralized mainnet launched in December 2020. The protocol runs on a network of Indexers, Curators, and Delegators who stake GRT tokens to operate nodes that index and serve structured data units called subgraphs. Economic incentives and staking requirements secure the integrity of indexed data and query responses, with the protocol built on Ethereum using the ERC-20 token standard. The native token, Graph Token (ticker: GRT), has three main purposes: paying query fees, staking by Indexers, Curators, and Delegators to participate in the network, and voting in governance. GRT launched with an initial supply of 10 billion tokens and carries a 3% annual issuance rate for indexing rewards alongside burning mechanisms, bringing the total supply to approximately 10.8 billion tokens. The Graph is primarily used by Web3 applications, particularly in decentralized finance, to access structured on-chain data through subgraph queries.
