Microsoft says the laptop runs some local AI tasks faster than a comparable MacBook Pro M5 and will begin shipping soon.

Microsoft unveiled pricing and availability for its Nvidia-powered Surface Laptop Ultra on Wednesday, with a starting price of $2,599, Bloomberg reported.

At an event in San Francisco, executives said the laptop responds to locally run AI prompts twice as fast as a comparable MacBook Pro M5 and generates video six times faster. Those are Microsoft’s performance claims.

The device will ship soon and costs about $400 less than an entry-level 16-inch MacBook Pro, according to Bloomberg.

Its Nvidia processor handles both general computing and AI workloads. Dell and HP have also developed Windows devices using the chip.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang joined Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to discuss the processor. Microsoft executives argued that local computing can reduce developers’ cloud spending and improve security, and highlighted Windows tools for controlling AI agents.

Nadella said AI tools would increasingly combine local hardware with cloud services.

Microsoft previously promoted AI PCs with Qualcomm in 2024, but privacy concerns complicated that launch. Gartner said earlier this year that rising memory prices would likely delay AI PCs becoming a majority of shipments until 2028.
