Most blockchain pitches lead with speed and cheap fees. MoneyGram says neither one is why it chose Stellar.

The company picked the network because it trusted it, ranking that above transaction speed or cost.

From pilot program to its own dollar token

The relationship is not new. MoneyGram started working with Stellar in 2021, back when most traditional finance firms treated blockchain like a science fair project.

By 2022, the partnership had produced something tangible: cash-to-USDC ramps live in over 170 countries. A ramp is the bridge between physical cash and digital money. Walk in with bills, walk out with a dollar-pegged token in a wallet, or do the reverse.

The next step came on June 2, 2026, when MoneyGram launched its own USD-pegged stablecoin, MGUSD. The token debuted in the US first, with a global rollout planned to follow.

A seat at the validator table

In July 2026, MoneyGram became a Tier 1 validator on the Stellar network. That’s a bigger commitment than simply building on the chain.

Validators are the participants that help confirm transactions and keep a blockchain’s ledger in agreement.

The validator role is also tied to MGUSD’s functionality. MoneyGram is positioning its systems around Stellar, including an in-app digital dollar balance feature in its app that runs exclusively on the network.

The scale behind the bet

The numbers explain why this partnership gets attention. MoneyGram serves approximately 60 million active customers and operates through approximately 475,000 locations across more than 170 countries.

The stablecoin’s accessibility features have been highlighted in Latin American markets, including Colombia and El Salvador.

Stellar Development Foundation CEO Denelle Dixon has called MGUSD a significant milestone. In her framing, it shows what a purpose-built blockchain can do when paired with a trusted payment network.

As of late October 2026, MoneyGram continues to promote the five-year partnership.

What this means for stablecoins and payment networks

The arc of the partnership, from USDC experiments in 2022 to a proprietary token and validator seat in 2026, shows how blockchain adoption in payments tends to unfold in practice. It moves in deliberate steps, it leans on existing cash networks, and it is built on relationships that take years to mature.
