About Stellar
Stellar is a public blockchain built for payments, cross-border transfers, and issuing digital versions of assets. Its native token, the lumen, pays transaction fees, covers minimum account balances, and can act as a bridge between different currencies on the network. Jed McCaleb launched Stellar in 2014, with Joyce Kim named as a co-founder, and the nonprofit Stellar Development Foundation oversees it. The network runs on the Stellar Consensus Protocol, which reaches agreement without mining or staking. About 100 billion lumens were created at launch, but in November 2019 the foundation burned roughly 55 billion, leaving a fixed supply near 50 billion, with no new lumens to be made.
