Nasdaq to introduce overnight trading session from 9 PM to 4 AM ET starting December 2026
Nasdaq expects to introduce trading from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. ET starting Dec. 6, pending SEC approval and industry infrastructure readiness.
Nasdaq plans to introduce an overnight trading session from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. ET as part of a broader move toward nearly continuous trading in US equities.
The exchange currently expects the transition to begin Sunday, Dec. 6, 2026, pending Securities and Exchange Commission rule changes and Securities Information Processor readiness.
The new session would extend Nasdaq trading to 23 hours a day, five days a week. Trading would begin at 9 p.m. ET on Sunday and continue through 8 p.m. ET on Friday, with a daily pause between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. for processing and the transition to the next trade date.
Nasdaq’s existing sessions from 4 a.m. through 8 p.m. ET would remain unchanged. The regular US session between 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. ET would also continue to determine prices through Nasdaq’s Opening and Closing Crosses.

Orders remaining open at 4 a.m. from the overnight session would be canceled and could then be submitted again during the following session. Nasdaq will support routable orders overnight, although several order types, including market orders and market on close orders, will not be available.
The exchange also plans additional protections for overnight trading. Pending SEC approval, orders outside static price bands would be rejected, with proposed upper and lower bands generally set 20% away from reference prices.
