NVIDIA Chief Executive Jensen Huang made his first post on X on Thursday, using it to share a letter advocating for open-weight AI models as a key pillar of American AI leadership.

The letter argues that AI will reshape every industry and economy, and that the US should foster both frontier proprietary models and open-weight models to maximize innovation, competition and resilience rather than concentrating development on closed systems.

According to the letter, open-weight models provide a shared technological foundation by allowing developers to download, inspect, modify and independently run advanced AI systems.

The signatories say this makes AI more accessible to businesses, universities and public institutions, promotes competition across the AI ecosystem and gives users greater control over their data and applications. They argue that while open models carry real risks, transparency ultimately improves cybersecurity by enabling independent testing, vulnerability discovery and continuous improvement.

The letter calls on policymakers to expand access to computing infrastructure, invest in public AI assets, reject premature regulation of open models and protect lawful innovation techniques, including model distillation, while targeting illegal misuse through focused enforcement.
