OpenAI upgrades ChatGPT Work with picture-in-picture mode and faster execution
The new feature turns ChatGPT into a multi-hour project manager that can research, build spreadsheets, and create presentations while you watch it work.
OpenAI just rolled out ChatGPT Work, a feature designed to handle the kind of sprawling professional tasks that normally eat up an entire afternoon. The upgrade, launched on July 9, brings picture-in-picture mode and faster execution to the platform, essentially turning ChatGPT from a chatbot into something closer to an autonomous coworker.
ChatGPT Work can break multi-hour projects into manageable steps, then execute them, producing reports, spreadsheets, and presentations along the way.
What ChatGPT Work actually does
Give ChatGPT Work a complex task, and it will research, analyze data, interact with files and applications, and produce polished deliverables. All while you monitor the process in real-time.
The picture-in-picture mode lets users keep an eye on what ChatGPT is doing while they continue working on other things.
Back in December 2025, the company shipped image generation speeds that were 4x faster than previous benchmarks.
There’s also a Scheduled Tasks feature baked in. This lets users set up actions that trigger automatically, which moves the product from “tool you use” to “system that runs in the background.”
Free and Go plan users get limited functionality, while Plus and Pro subscribers unlock the full suite.
What this means for investors
Notably absent from the ChatGPT Work rollout: any mention of crypto tokens, digital assets, or blockchain integration. OpenAI is playing this one entirely on the utility side, positioning itself as a practical tool for professionals rather than anything adjacent to speculative technology.
By gating the most powerful features behind Plus and Pro subscriptions, OpenAI is building a revenue engine that scales with enterprise adoption.
