OpenAI hires ex-Cursor executive Ismail Elmas to lead EMEA sales
The Munich-based hire is the second SpaceX-linked recruit in a month as OpenAI builds out its enterprise sales operation in a skeptical region
OpenAI has named Ismail Elmas vice president of sales for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The hire was announced on October 8, 2026.
Who Elmas is and what he’ll run
Elmas will work out of Munich. From there he’ll oversee every sales employee in OpenAI’s EMEA division.
He arrives from Cursor, the AI coding automation startup, where he served as senior vice president. Cursor was acquired by SpaceX for $60 billion, a deal that closed on August 14, 2026.
His résumé runs back more than two decades in enterprise software and cybersecurity. He has held leadership roles at Rubrik and Zscaler, two firms whose entire pitch is persuading cautious IT departments to trust them with sensitive systems.
Elmas also holds a Dipl.-Ing. in mechanical engineering from the University of Stuttgart.
A pattern of SpaceX-linked hires
Elmas is not the first executive OpenAI has pulled from Elon Musk’s corporate orbit recently. Brian McCarthy joined OpenAI from SpaceX in September 2026.
That makes Elmas the second SpaceX-connected recruit in roughly a month. The timing is notable. Cursor’s acquisition closed in mid-August, and Elmas’s appointment landed less than two months later.

Why Europe, and why now
OpenAI wants to substantially grow its European sales team. It is doing so while European regulators keep a close eye on US technology companies.
Enterprise customers in the region often worry about data residency, regulatory exposure and dependence on American platforms. AI developers based in the EMEA region are courting the same customers.
OpenAI is also navigating the complexities of international data-center partnerships. The company is pursuing new income streams, including advertising, alongside its enterprise push.
There are indications that OpenAI is targeting an initial public offering in 2027.
What this means for OpenAI and its rivals
For OpenAI, the Elmas hire is a bet that enterprise AI in Europe will be won by seasoned salespeople. His cybersecurity background at Rubrik and Zscaler points to a sales motion built around trust, compliance and long procurement cycles.
Two SpaceX-linked hires in about a month suggests OpenAI sees the post-acquisition shuffle at Musk-affiliated companies as a useful talent pool.
The key signals to track are how quickly OpenAI expands its European headcount, which large regional customers it announces, and how its data-center partnerships in the region develop.
