OpenAI is developing a portable AI speaker with a doughnut shaped design, moving components, cameras, and an expected price between $300 and $400, according to people familiar with the project cited by Bloomberg.

The screen free device is expected to launch in 2027 and would become OpenAI’s first consumer hardware product. Earlier reporting described the product as a portable smart speaker designed to operate as a humanlike AI companion inside the home.

The device is reportedly about the size of a hockey puck and designed to be carried around a home with one hand. It will be battery powered and capable of operating while held by a user or placed on surfaces such as a kitchen counter or nightstand.

OpenAI plans to position the product as an AI first computer rather than a conventional smart speaker. The company expects users to interact with it throughout the day to ask questions, complete tasks, control connected devices, play media, and respond to messages.

The device will operate similarly to ChatGPT’s voice mode but use more advanced models intended to support more natural and personalized interactions. It is expected to learn about users over time and use that information to tailor its responses.

Moving components inside the circular device will indicate when it is listening, responding, or interacting. OpenAI is also planning to include lights that provide visual feedback during conversations.

The speaker will contain microphones and speaker grills, along with cameras and other sensors that allow it to process information about its surroundings. Previous reports said the cameras and sensors would help the device understand user context and the environment around it.

OpenAI has discussed pricing the device between $300 and $400. That would make it more expensive than most smart speakers but less expensive than a standard iPhone.

The product is being designed in collaboration with Jony Ive’s LoveFrom studio. OpenAI acquired io, the AI hardware startup cofounded by Ive, for approximately $6.5 billion last year as part of its expansion into consumer devices.

The company eventually plans to release a family of AI devices. The portable speaker is intended to provide an initial entry into the hardware market before OpenAI develops products that could compete more directly with smartphones.

The reported design emerges as OpenAI faces a trade secret lawsuit from Apple involving its consumer hardware development.

Apple alleges that OpenAI obtained confidential hardware information through former Apple employees, recruitment practices, and relationships with suppliers. The company is seeking an injunction that could prevent OpenAI from using disputed information while the lawsuit proceeds.

One allegation involves OpenAI reportedly asking an Apple supplier to develop a metal finishing process for an upcoming product. Apple claims the process was similar to confidential techniques used for its own devices.

OpenAI has denied using or seeking Apple’s trade secrets. In a motion filed Wednesday, the company asked a federal judge to dismiss the lawsuit and said its hardware work is entirely different from anything developed by Apple.

The company also argued that Apple had not sufficiently identified the information it claims is protected or demonstrated that any defendant misappropriated a trade secret.

OpenAI conducted an internal investigation after Apple filed the lawsuit and concluded that the new device does not use or violate Apple’s intellectual property, according to Bloomberg.

The doughnut shaped design is distinct from Apple’s current HomePod speaker lineup, which does not include a portable battery powered model. Apple is separately developing future home products, including a smart display attached to a robotic arm.

OpenAI has sought to unveil its device in 2026 before making it available to consumers in 2027. The company continues to proceed with development as the legal dispute with Apple moves forward.
