OpenAI names Uday Ruddarraju to lead infrastructure and compute

Sachin Katti will move to an advisory role, while the GPT-Infra initiative shifts to chip chief Richard Ho.

OpenAI has appointed Uday Ruddarraju to lead its infrastructure and compute businesses as Sachin Katti steps down from overseeing the infrastructure unit, Bloomberg reported on October 14.

Ruddarraju joined OpenAI in 2025 after working at xAI and became chief technology officer for compute in July. Katti will transition out over the coming weeks and remain an advisor.

Ruddarraju told Bloomberg that his work across engineering, construction and technical teams should help the transition. Strategy and business leaders reporting to Katti will remain in their roles, he said.

Katti oversaw projects including an 8-gigawatt Ohio development with SB Energy and Nvidia and an OpenAI-led site in Georgia. CEO Sam Altman has said OpenAI will likely spend trillions of dollars on physical AI infrastructure.

The GPT-Infra initiative, which applies OpenAI models to semiconductor and infrastructure development, will move under chip chief Richard Ho. Katti had overseen that work since July.

The appointment follows other departures from the infrastructure organization. Chris Malone left in August, while Stargate executive Peter Hoeschele and two colleagues moved to Meta earlier this year.
