OpenRouter crosses a 10 quadrillion annual token run rate
The AI model router's growth is being driven by autonomous agents, which now consume far more tokens than human users
OpenRouter, the platform that lets developers reach hundreds of AI models through a single API, has hit an annualized run rate of over 10 quadrillion tokens. The milestone was announced on November 2, 2026.
The figure matters because tokens are the basic unit of AI consumption. When usage at a middleman like OpenRouter compounds this fast, it offers a rough read on how much the broader economy is actually leaning on large language models.
The numbers behind the milestone
A token is a chunk of text, often a piece of a word, that a language model reads or writes. Every prompt and every response gets metered in tokens, so token volume is roughly the AI industry’s version of kilowatt-hours.
OpenRouter processed approximately 194 trillion tokens in the week ending October 26, 2026. That single weekly figure exceeded the platform’s prior cumulative output spanning around 39 months, according to the research findings.
Multiply that week by 52 and you land just over 10 quadrillion. That is how a run rate works: it takes recent activity and projects it across a full year.
The trajectory is steep. OpenRouter reached an annual run rate of 1.5 quadrillion tokens by May 2026. Getting from there to 10 quadrillion means the run rate grew more than sixfold in roughly half a year.
Daily volume tells a similar story. The platform hit 23.8 trillion tokens per day in October 2026, growing at 33x year over year. Monthly volume rose 30 times year over year in certain periods.

The robots are doing most of the talking
The biggest driver behind the surge is not people typing into chat boxes. It is AI agents.
Agents are autonomous systems that carry out multistep tasks on their own, often calling several different models along the way.
AI agents overtook human interaction in token usage starting February 6, 2026. By the end of September, agents were consuming about seven times as many tokens as human users.
How OpenRouter got here
OpenRouter was founded in 2023 in New York by Alex Atallah and Louis Vichy. Its pitch is simple: instead of signing up separately with every AI lab, developers connect once and route requests to whichever model fits.
The platform routes between 400 and 600 models from more than 60 providers. It serves a developer base of more than 10 million and processes hundreds of trillions of tokens each month.
Its business model is a take rate of about 5% on that traffic.
OpenRouter has raised over $150 million to date, including a $113 million Series B at a $1.3 billion valuation in May 2026.
Then came Stripe. The payments giant moved to acquire OpenRouter, with the research findings dating the deal to August 2026. Estimates of the price range from $7 billion to $10 billion, and some reports point to a figure around $8 billion. Neither company’s confirmed terms appear in the available material, so those numbers remain estimates.
