Reach cuts 220 editorial jobs as AI traffic collapse reshapes UK news publishing
The Mirror and Express publisher is closing three digital outlets and shedding staff as page views fall nearly 40% and AI summaries eat into web traffic
Reach plc, the UK’s largest regional and national news publisher, is cutting around 220 editorial jobs and shutting three digital-only news outlets as part of a sweeping restructure it describes as a response to a “mammoth shift” in how people consume news online.
The closures affect KentLive, AberdeenLive, and GalwayBeo, three digital properties Reach built during an era of aggressive online expansion. Roughly 60 new roles will be created alongside the cuts, leaving a net reduction of approximately 160 positions across the business.
The numbers behind the decision
Page views across its properties fell nearly 40% year-on-year as of mid-2026, a collapse that has ripped through its advertising economics.
In the first half of 2026, overall revenues fell 9%, with digital revenues dropping more than 11%. Reach is targeting a 5-6% reduction in adjusted operating costs for 2026, building on a 2025 restructure that had already produced a net reduction of 186 editorial roles.
What is actually killing traffic at Reach
Google’s algorithm changes have hammered referral traffic to traditional news publishers. Reach’s high-volume content model, which relied on producing enormous quantities of stories optimized to rank in search results, depended on Google sending readers its way.

AI-generated summaries, surfaced directly in search results by tools like Google’s AI Overviews and various AI chatbots, are answering readers’ questions before they ever click through to a news article. A reader who gets a four-sentence summary of local council decisions from an AI interface is a reader who never loads a Reach page, never sees an ad, and never contributes to the revenue line.
Reach has pursued some AI-related strategies of its own. Its Guten tool is designed to re-version content across its titles automatically, and the company has licensing agreements with platforms including Amazon AWS.
A strategy pivot with real stakes
The restructure signals a deliberate move away from the high-volume, search-optimized content machine that defined UK regional digital publishing for the better part of a decade. Reach is pivoting toward quality video and audio content, digital subscriptions, and what it describes as brand visibility.
The 60 new roles being created alongside the 220 cuts gesture at this shift, though the net headcount reduction suggests the new model will be materially smaller than the old one.
For the communities served by KentLive, AberdeenLive, and GalwayBeo, the closures represent a reduction in local accountability journalism. Digital-only local outlets were supposed to be the lean, low-cost successor to print local newspapers.
