Reddit CEO Steve Huffman critiques Google’s AI Overviews feature, raising questions about crypto content visibility
Huffman's complaints about AI-generated search summaries carry real implications for how crypto communities get discovered online
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman used his Q2 2026 earnings call to take a pointed swing at Google’s AI Overviews feature, arguing that the AI-generated summaries sitting atop search results haven’t delivered referral traffic comparable to the old-fashioned “10 blue links” format.
Huffman’s critique, delivered to investors on July 30, came packaged alongside strong financial results. Reddit beat analyst expectations for Q2 and guided Q3 revenue between $860 million and $870 million.
What Huffman actually said, and why it matters
Google’s AI Overviews, which have been rolling out broadly since 2024 and 2025, attempt to answer user queries directly on the search results page. Instead of clicking through to Reddit threads, blog posts, or news articles, users get a machine-generated summary.
Huffman’s position is that this feature creates “uncertainty” for platforms that depend on search discovery to attract new users. He emphasized that AI-generated summaries haven’t replaced the traffic value that traditional search results provide.
Google had actually integrated Reddit content quoting features into AI Overviews by May 2026, essentially pulling Reddit’s own words into its summaries.
The crypto angle hiding in plain sight
Reddit isn’t just any content platform for the crypto world. The r/CryptoCurrency subreddit has served as a primary venue for retail investor sentiment, project analysis, and crowd-sourced due diligence.
Reddit’s own history with crypto adds another layer. The platform launched its Community Points program, which included the MOON token on Ethereum’s Arbitrum network, as an experiment in on-chain incentives for user participation. That program was phased out by November 2023 due to scaling issues.
Reddit’s strategic pivot and what investors should watch
Reddit appears to be doubling down on direct user acquisition and product improvements designed to make the platform less dependent on Google as a traffic source. The strong Q3 guidance suggests confidence that this approach is working, at least financially.
The company has also been aggressive about controlling how its data gets used by AI companies. In 2024, Huffman mandated licensing agreements for firms like Microsoft and Anthropic that wanted to train models on Reddit content.
