Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup spotlight reignites focus on his Binance NFT empire
As the 41-year-old prepares for a blockbuster Round of 16 clash against Spain, his crypto footprint remains one of the most significant athlete-Web3 partnerships in the space.
Cristiano Ronaldo is set to face the media ahead of Portugal’s World Cup 2026 Round of 16 match against Spain on July 6 in Dallas. Ronaldo, 41, is Portugal’s top scorer in the tournament with three goals, including a penalty equalizer against Croatia.
The Binance partnership and the CR7 NFT machine
Ronaldo’s multi-year partnership with Binance, which kicked off in 2022, remains one of the highest-profile collaborations between a traditional sports icon and a crypto exchange. The deal produced the CR7 ForeverZone brand, an NFT platform designed to give fans access to exclusive content and experiences tied to Ronaldo’s career.
The collaboration has generated at least four NFT collections to date. In 2023, Binance issued 50,000 mystery boxes under the CR7 ForeverZone banner. Subsequent drops included ForeverSkills and Forever Worldwide, with the ForeverSkills collection scheduled for December 2024.
The meme coin problem
Unauthorized meme coins bearing Ronaldo’s name or likeness have proliferated across blockchains like Solana and Binance Smart Chain. Tokens with tickers like RONALDO or CR7 have attracted speculative traders looking to ride the hype around major sporting events. One such meme token briefly reached a market cap of $143 million before collapsing by 98% in early 2025.
Meme coin activity linked to Ronaldo reportedly peaked around August 2025, driven by unauthorized promotions timed to coincide with his public appearances and matches. None of these tokens have any official connection to Ronaldo or his team.
No new official tokens ahead of the match
No new official tokens or cryptocurrency assets tied to Ronaldo have been reported in the 30 days leading up to July 5, 2026.
What this means for investors
The meme coin landscape carries significant historical risk. The 98% collapse of one Ronaldo-themed token in early 2025 is not an outlier in celebrity meme coins that lack utility, governance, or any connection to the person whose name they borrow.
Ronaldo commented ahead of the Spain match: “There are no easy games.”
