RWA perpetuals open interest nears $20 billion, CryptoRank data shows

Leveraged bets on tokenized stocks, commodities and indices are growing far faster than the rest of the perps market

Open interest in real-world asset perpetual futures has climbed to approximately $20 billion, according to tracking data from CryptoRank.

That figure, recorded as of October 26, 2026, represents a 192% increase since June of the same year. Traders, it turns out, have discovered they can lever up on gold and equities without ever leaving the crypto app.

What the numbers show

A quick primer first. A perpetual future, or “perp,” is a derivative contract that lets traders bet on an asset’s price with leverage and no expiry date.

Open interest measures the total value of those contracts still outstanding. Think of it as the size of the bets currently on the table, not the number of chips that changed hands today.

RWA perps apply that structure to tokenized versions of traditional assets. According to the research, that includes equities, commodities and indices.

The pace of growth stands out. CryptoRank’s data puts RWA perpetual open interest at $9.3 billion in August 2026.

By late October, the figure was approaching $20 billion. That is more than a doubling in roughly two months.

The more telling metric may be market share. RWA contracts made up 6% of total perpetual open interest at the start of 2026.

By late September, that share had grown to 24%. Roughly one dollar in every four sitting in perpetual futures was tied to a real-world asset rather than a native crypto token.

Centralized exchanges still hold the lead

The split between venue types tells its own story. Centralized exchanges control 71% of RWA perpetual open interest, per the data.

Their strength lies in contracts tied to equities and precious metals. These are the familiar products: single stocks, gold, silver.

Decentralized exchanges account for the remaining 29%. DEXs hold a leading position in one specific category: equity index derivatives.

Earlier in 2026, DEXs were reported to have perpetual open interest of $19 billion.

Platforms such as Trade.xyz and Variational have become key players in the volume and open interest rankings for RWA perps.

Why tokenization is driving the trend

The rise of RWA perps reflects a broader push throughout 2026 to tokenize real-world assets. Bringing stocks, commodities and indices on-chain was the first step.

For traders, the appeal is convenience. A crypto account holder can trade tokenized equities or gold exposure in the same place they trade Bitcoin, often around the clock.

A jump from 6% to 24% of total perp open interest within the first three quarters of a year suggests this is more than a handful of curious traders testing a new product.

What this means for the market

The research frames the surge as a sign of robust demand for leveraged exposure to tokenized traditional assets. It also suggests the rise could potentially attract more institutional and retail participation into crypto derivatives.

The venue split is the more interesting competitive story. Centralized exchanges dominate overall, while decentralized platforms lead in index products.

The research notes that DEX presence could encourage competition and innovation in the sector. Names like Trade.xyz and Variational climbing the rankings are an early indicator of that pressure.

The research describes this as a potential diversification of trading strategies. Traders may be reacting to market conditions by spreading bets beyond crypto-native assets, while keeping their activity inside crypto infrastructure.
