Salesforce partners with Anthropic as Claude becomes the brain behind Slackbot
Salesforce's $600 million bet on Anthropic culminates in Claudeforce, making Claude the default reasoning engine across Slack and Agentforce
Salesforce just handed the keys to Slackbot over to Anthropic’s Claude. The two companies unveiled Claudeforce on August 26, a deep integration that makes Claude the default AI model powering Slack, Agentforce, and a growing list of enterprise tools across Salesforce’s ecosystem.
The partnership comes with serious financial backing. Salesforce holds an equity stake in Anthropic exceeding $300 million and plans to spend another $300 million on Anthropic tokens in 2026 alone, bringing its total financial commitment north of $600 million.
How Salesforce ended up choosing Anthropic over OpenAI
The origin story here is worth noting. Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff disclosed that his company originally wanted to invest in OpenAI. Microsoft’s massive investment in that company changed the calculus, and Salesforce pivoted to Anthropic instead.
Rather than simply licensing an AI model and slapping it onto existing products, the two companies have been building toward this moment through a series of escalating integrations. In October 2025, the partnership expanded to cover regulated industries. By February 2026, Slack context was being piped directly into Claude, giving the model real-time awareness of workplace conversations and data flows.
Claudeforce represents the culmination of that groundwork. Claude now functions as the reasoning engine across Salesforce’s product suite, handling everything from natural language queries in Slack channels to orchestrating complex enterprise workflows through Agentforce.

What Claudeforce actually does
The integration goes well beyond a chatbot upgrade. Claudeforce introduces the “Salesforce in Claude” plugin, which ships with 37 prebuilt skills focused on sales functions. Think of it as giving Claude a toolkit specifically designed for the workflows that CRM users deal with daily: pipeline management, account research, forecasting, and the kind of repetitive data entry that makes salespeople question their life choices.
The plugin entered pilot testing in August 2026 and is expected to move into open beta by September.
One of the more technically interesting aspects is the use of Model Context Protocol, or MCP. This is Anthropic’s open standard for connecting AI models to external data sources and tools. In the Claudeforce context, MCP allows enterprise actions to be performed directly through Claude’s interface or within Slack channels, without users needing to switch between applications.
Salesforce says the implementation has already generated 8.1 million hours of annualized productivity gains for its own employees. That figure represents a significant quarter-over-quarter increase, though the company hasn’t disclosed the baseline comparison.
The $300 million token spend projection for 2026 reveals something about where Salesforce sees the most immediate value. The company has directed much of that compute budget toward AI coding agents that have improved internal developer productivity.
