Mexico’s top trade negotiator is staying in Washington as Canada’s talks with the US collapse.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she remains optimistic about reaching a trade agreement with the United States as her top negotiator continues talks in Washington, Bloomberg reported.
Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard is seeking relief from 50% US tariffs on Mexican steel and aluminum and 25% duties on automobiles. The negotiations are taking place alongside the annual review phase of the six-year-old USMCA pact.
The collapse of US-Canada negotiations prompted President Donald Trump to threaten higher tariffs on Canadian vehicles and parts. Canada also announced retaliatory measures, creating a more difficult North American trade backdrop.
Analysts said the breakdown between Washington and Ottawa could create room for Mexico, but any deal will still have to address tariffs, supply chains, and the future of the regional trade framework.
