Sunderland signs Thomas Meunier as free agent on two-year deal
The veteran Belgian right-back joins the Championship side after his contract with Lille expired, bringing World Cup experience and top-level pedigree to Wearside
Thomas Meunier became a free agent after his contract with Lille OSC expired in June 2026. He joined Lille on a free transfer in July 2024 and made 55 appearances for the club before his contract ran out.
Born on September 12, 1991, Meunier has accumulated more than 60 caps for the Belgian national team. He has played for Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Trabzonspor, and most recently Lille. He also featured for Belgium at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
As of late June 2026, Hull City — a newly promoted Premier League side — are reported to be in advanced negotiations with Meunier. There was prior unconfirmed interest from Sunderland in August 2025, but no substantial developments took place, and as of mid-July 2026, no credible sources back a transfer to Sunderland.
