US stocks fall as oil prices and Treasury yields rise
The S&P 500 fell 0.6% while the Nasdaq 100 dropped 0.7%, with Walmart’s earnings adding pressure to consumer stocks.
US stocks fell Thursday as oil prices rose and a rally in government bonds sputtered, pushing Treasury yields higher. Disappointing Walmart earnings also pressured the retail sector.
The S&P 500 fell 0.6% as of 1:50 p.m. in New York, while the Nasdaq 100 declined 0.7% and was on track for a fifth straight session of losses.
Brent crude rose as much as 3.4% to nearly $95 a barrel after President Donald Trump threatened Iran with “economic warfare.” The 10-year Treasury yield climbed to 4.71%.
Walmart shares fell as much as 10% after the company reported second-quarter results that missed estimates. Sales at US stores open at least a year, excluding fuel, rose 2.6%, the slowest growth in more than six years.
