Variational becomes largest on-chain venue for RWA derivatives
The Arbitrum-based protocol passed TradeXYZ on volume after its September swaps launch tapped liquidity from traditional finance dealers
Variational is now the biggest on-chain venue for real-world asset derivatives by trading volume. The Arbitrum-based protocol announced the milestone on October 14, 2026, overtaking TradeXYZ, which had held the top spot for over a year.
From six markets to a category leader
Real-world asset (RWA) derivatives are contracts that track things like gold, silver, and stock indices, but trade on a blockchain instead of a traditional exchange. Open interest is the total value of contracts still open, a rough measure of how much money is actually committed to a market.
In May 2026, the platform listed just six RWA markets with approximately $188 million in open interest. By September, it had expanded to over 119 markets. Open interest tied to traditional finance assets had climbed past $700 million.
That May starting point was busy in other ways too. Variational began offering commodity perps on gold and silver that month. It also closed a $50 million Series A round led by Dragonfly.
Perps, short for perpetual futures, are derivatives with no expiration date. Traders can hold positions indefinitely, paying or receiving a periodic fee called a funding rate to keep the contract price anchored to the underlying asset.
Swaps did the heavy lifting
The real turning point came on September 1, 2026, when Variational launched its swaps product. The design let the protocol pull liquidity directly from traditional finance dealers, the same kind of firms that make markets on Wall Street.

The US100 swap hit peak daily volume above $1 billion in late September.
Variational’s analysis points to a specific appeal: swaps offer more predictable carry costs than the funding rates on perpetual contracts. Funding rates can swing with market sentiment, which makes the cost of holding a position hard to forecast.
Variational settles trades peer-to-peer in USDC, the dollar-pegged stablecoin. It sources liquidity through a request-for-quote model rather than a traditional on-chain order book. With request-for-quote, a trader asks for a price and liquidity providers respond with offers. That approach lets Variational list markets ranging from commodities to equity indices without building deep order book liquidity for each one. Its trading platform connects to centralized exchanges, decentralized venues, and TradFi dealers.
A two-horse race in a growing market
Open interest in RWA perps reached a record $5.78 billion in early October 2026. Within that market, Variational and TradeXYZ reportedly accounted for roughly 84% of RWA perps open interest as of early October. Variational passing TradeXYZ on volume is the first time the incumbent has been knocked off the top in over a year.
Worth noting: volume and open interest measure different things. Volume tracks how much trades hands. Open interest tracks how much stays committed. Leading on one does not automatically mean leading on the other.
For investors watching the space, the $50 million Dragonfly-led raise in May now has a visible return on effort: a platform that went from six markets to over 119, and from second place to first on volume, inside roughly five months.
