Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum and one of crypto’s most prolific essayists, is stepping back from his regular blog posts. His new focus: writing science fiction about decentralized governance.

From whitepapers to world-building

Buterin has committed to reducing the frequency of his long-form essays, the dense, wide-ranging posts that have become something of a ritual for the Ethereum community. In their place, he’s channeling his energy into a science fiction novel centered on decentralized governance, alongside several shorter stories exploring related themes.

The stories aren’t just creative exercises. They’re designed to stress-test ideas about how decentralized systems and DAOs might reshape political and institutional structures.

Buterin has already drafted several of these governance-themed sci-fi pieces. The shorter works explore the political possibilities enabled by blockchain technology and decentralized autonomous organizations, essentially using narrative as a sandbox for concepts that are difficult to convey through technical writing alone.

Why fiction, why now

Buterin has long cited science fiction as a formative influence on his thinking. He’s pointed to Vernor Vinge’s Rainbows End as a work that shaped how he envisions future digital economies and collaborative networks.

The move also aligns with Buterin’s broader intellectual trajectory. He’s been increasingly focused on coordination mechanisms, governance theory, and what he calls “defensive acceleration” for artificial intelligence.
