1kx projects blockchain revenue to hit about $100B in 2026

The investment firm's second annual report shows a 28% drop, while institutional and real-economy apps overtake infrastructure for the first time

Blockchain is still a business that brings in serious money. It just brings in less of it when token prices fall.

Investment firm 1kx published its second annual Blockchain Revenue Report on October 29, 2026. It projects total industry revenue of approximately $100 billion for the year. That figure is a 28% decline from the prior year’s estimate of around $140 billion.

The numbers behind the drop

1kx attributes the 28% decline mainly to falling digital asset prices. The report also says revenue has stabilized relative to overall market capitalization.

Onchain activity remains a meaningful revenue source. User-paid onchain fees were estimated at $3.9 billion in Q3. 1kx projects fees of $14 billion for the full year.

The institutions move in

Revenue from institutional adoption and broader-economy applications made up 30% of total blockchain revenue in 2026.

In Q3, that share climbed to 33%. That quarter, these applications produced more revenue than blockchain infrastructure for the first time.

Publicly listed companies are also taking a larger share. They accounted for 16% of blockchain revenue in 2026, compared with 7% in 2022. The top six public companies generated approximately 60% of public-sector blockchain revenue.

Token holders are getting paid

A record 283 blockchain protocols returned value to token holders in Q3. They used mechanisms such as buybacks and fee distributions.

Background: a report built around fundamentals

This is the second edition of 1kx’s annual revenue study. The firm frames its research around a fundamentals-focused view of the sector, centering on how much money blockchain businesses actually generate rather than how their tokens are priced.

The comparison with 2022 is also helpful. Back then, public companies captured just 7% of blockchain revenue.
