Borrowing USDT on Aave just got pricier, at least when the pool starts running dry. On October 21, 2026, Aave lowered the utilization point where its USDT interest rates shift into a higher gear on the Ethereum V3 Core market.
The threshold, known as the “kink,” moved from 94% to 92%. Two percentage points sounds tiny. For a borrower sitting in a pool that is nearly tapped out, it changes the math considerably.
What changed on Aave’s USDT market
Aave prices loans with what is called a two-slope interest rate model. Below the kink, rates rise slowly along the first slope. Above it, the second, much steeper slope takes over.
The change took effect at block 26,241,799. It followed a recommendation that DeFi risk management firm LlamaRisk made on October 20, 2026, one day before the switch flipped.
Only the kink moved. The rest of the curve stays exactly where it was:
- Base rate: 0%
- Slope 1: 4.5%
- Slope 2: 10%
- Borrow rate at full utilization: 14.5%
Take a pool running at 94% utilization. Under the old setup, that level sat right at the kink, so the borrow APR topped out at 4.5%. Under the new curve, the same 94% is two points into the steep zone, putting the APR at approximately 7%.
The market was already flirting with the line
Earlier in October, utilization generally stayed below the new 92% threshold. Variable borrow rates hovered around 4.2% to 4.5%, while suppliers earned near 3.3%.

By late October, utilization on the USDT market had peaked at approximately 94.3%. Supply APY reached 6.50%, and variable borrow APY hit 7.70%.
What happens to loans that already exist
Interest that has already accrued on a USDT loan stays exactly as it was. The new parameters apply only going forward, shaping how a balance grows from the moment the change took effect.
Why Aave went with a nudge instead of a wall
According to LlamaRisk’s estimate, the kink change should create an extra withdrawal buffer of around 57.8 million USDT at current supply levels. That buffer comes without requiring new capital and without imposing hard limits on users.
What this means for borrowers, suppliers and DeFi lending
For anyone borrowing USDT on Aave’s Ethereum market with a variable rate, the key number is now 92%. Once utilization climbs past it, rates can rise sharply, and the slope is steep.
Between 92% and full utilization, borrow rates can climb from 4.5% to 14.5%. That is a 10-point swing compressed into just 8 percentage points of utilization.
The late-October readings near 94.3% utilization suggest demand to borrow USDT on Aave has been running hot. A protocol tightening its curve in response tells you liquidity, not demand, was the constraint.
The metrics worth watching are straightforward: USDT utilization on the Ethereum V3 Core market, variable borrow APY, and supply APY.
