About Aave
Aave is a decentralized, non-custodial protocol for lending and borrowing crypto. Users supply assets to earn interest or borrow by posting collateral worth more than the loan, and the AAVE token is also used for governance. Stani Kulechov created the project, which started as ETHLend in 2017 and was renamed Aave in September 2018. Because it is an application rather than a blockchain, Aave has no consensus of its own; its smart contracts run on Ethereum and other networks. The token has a fixed supply of 16 million, with part held in reserve by the protocol treasury rather than circulating.
The Crypto Briefing take
Our desk on Aave
What it is
Aave is the largest decentralized lending market in crypto. You deposit tokens to earn yield, or lock collateral to borrow against it, all through smart contracts with no bank in the middle. It started as ETHLend in 2017, was renamed Aave in 2018, and now runs across Ethereum and other chains. The AAVE token governs how the protocol sets rates, risk and collateral.
Why Crypto Briefing covers it
Aave is where a large share of DeFi's real money actually sits, so it works as a barometer for the whole lending sector. When institutions test on-chain credit, they tend to test it here first, which makes Aave an early read on whether traditional finance trusts on-chain lending. Its rate changes, its launches on new chains, and its governance fights usually set the template the rest of DeFi copies.
What the desk watches
Total value locked and utilization (how much of the supplied liquidity is actually being borrowed), because that is the live read on demand. Governance proposals that change collateral or risk parameters. GHO, Aave's own stablecoin, and whether it holds its peg and grows. And any institutional or real-world-asset integration, since that is the bet that turns Aave from a crypto-native tool into plumbing that traditional finance can use.
