Amad Diallo needed roughly 14 minutes on the pitch to remind the world why Manchester United rates him so highly. The Ivory Coast winger entered a round-of-32 clash against Norway as a substitute in the 60th minute and proceeded to clear a ball off the line, then curl in one of the prettiest goals of the entire 2026 FIFA World Cup.
It wasn’t enough. Erling Haaland, because of course it was Erling Haaland, buried a late winner in the 86th minute to send Norway through with a 2-1 victory. But Diallo’s cameo was the kind of performance that lingers in highlight reels long after the tournament brackets are forgotten.
A substitute’s masterclass in 14 minutes
Norway had taken the lead through Antonio Nusa, and Ivory Coast looked like they were running out of ideas. Then Diallo entered the match.
His first notable contribution came in the 67th minute, just seven minutes after stepping onto the field. A defensive intervention, clearing the ball off the goal line, kept Ivory Coast within striking distance.
The glamorous stuff arrived seven minutes later. In the 74th minute, Diallo unleashed a curling shot that found the back of the net to level the score at 1-1. The strike was immediately flagged by commentators and fans as a contender for goal of the tournament.
Unfortunately for Diallo and Ivory Coast, Haaland had other plans. The Manchester City striker’s 86th-minute goal sealed the deal and sent Norway into the round of 16. For Norway, the win was historic. It marked the country’s first-ever knockout-stage victory in World Cup history.
Diallo’s growing World Cup résumé
The Norway match wasn’t Diallo’s first statement performance at this tournament. Earlier in the 2026 World Cup, he scored a match-winning goal against Ecuador, establishing himself as one of the most impactful substitutes in the competition.
That’s two goals and a goal-line clearance across the tournament. Ivory Coast’s coaching staff clearly views Diallo as a weapon off the bench, someone whose pace and directness can exploit tired defenders in the second half.
