Amazon seeks FCC approval for 5,000 satellites to provide cell service from space

The proposed constellation would connect smartphones directly from space as Amazon expands its competition with SpaceX and other satellite providers.

Amazon has asked the US Federal Communications Commission for permission to deploy a network of 5,000 satellites capable of delivering mobile services directly to smartphones.

The proposed low Earth orbit constellation would support messaging, data, and emergency communications in areas without traditional cellular coverage, according to a company release.

Amazon expects to begin deploying the network in 2028.

The plan expands the company’s satellite ambitions and places it in more direct competition with SpaceX, whose Starlink service already provides direct to device connectivity through a partnership with T Mobile.

AST SpaceMobile is also building a competing satellite mobile network through agreements with Verizon and AT&T.

Amazon’s request follows its announced $11.6 billion acquisition of satellite operator Globalstar. The transaction would give Amazon access to spectrum that can transmit data directly to mobile devices.

The company has also formed partnerships with Vodafone and DirecTV, allowing the telecommunications providers to offer satellite based services to their customers. Amazon said it intends to pursue additional arrangements with mobile and communications companies.

The direct to device network would operate separately from Amazon Leo, the company’s broadband satellite constellation designed to connect users through ground based receivers.

Amazon expects Amazon Leo to begin commercial service by the end of 2026, though the project has faced delays in launching its satellites.

Amazon Leo also has an agreement with Apple to provide satellite connectivity for iPhones and Apple Watches.
