Apple shares surge nearly 7% as Democrats’ midterm wins boost Big Tech

Investors are betting that tighter limits on new data centers could protect the giants that already own the computing power
Apple shares jumped nearly 7% on Wednesday and hit a record high. The catalyst was a Democratic sweep in the US midterm elections.
The midterms handed Democrats control of both the House and the Senate. Tech giants rallied hard the next day.
Apple led the headlines. Its climb of nearly 7% pushed the stock to an all-time high and lifted its market capitalization above $5 trillion.
Amazon and Microsoft also posted notable gains. Taken together, five major tech companies were on track to add more than $750 billion in combined market value, assuming the gains held through the session.
The research behind the rally points to a sizable scope for disruption. Democratic gains at the state level could affect approximately 45% of planned US data-center capacity.
That figure reflects growing local opposition to new facilities. Residents and officials have raised concerns about environmental impact and the strain these projects place on utilities.

Data centers consume enormous amounts of electricity and, in many cases, water.
The losers on the other side of the trade
Not every company tied to computing infrastructure enjoyed the day. The pain landed on firms whose business depends on building and running new data-center capacity.
IREN fell 14%. Hut 8 had an even rougher session, dropping 22.7%.
The split is stark. Hyperscalers that already own capacity rallied, while operators hoping to expand it sold off sharply.
What this means for investors and the AI buildout
The 45% figure describes capacity that could be affected, not projects that have been canceled.
The $750 billion gain also comes with a condition attached. It only holds if the stocks keep their gains, and single-day election rallies have a habit of being revised once the details arrive.

Missing figures stay unavailable. Forward P/E requires a dated source. Annual revenue, revenue growth, net income and margin come from each company's own 10-K, in US dollars, and each row shows that fiscal year. Revenue growth compares the fiscal year with the prior year stated in the same 10-K. Net income is the full year amount attributable to the company, or available to common stockholders where the filing states only that, or consolidated net income. Each row names its basis. Trailing P/E reads "Not meaningful" when the dated trailing diluted EPS is a loss or zero. An operating margin appears only when the filing states both the operating income and the revenue for the same year.
Sources: SEC filings, Gloria daily closes and CoinGecko. Oldest record refresh: Nov 4, 2026, 8:21 AM EST. Refresh is not a price or filing date. Each row shows its price date and its annual fiscal period. Peers use industry code and company size, or editorial selection. Market cap multiplies that row price by the company share total the latest SEC filing states for every share class together. Trailing P/E divides it by trailing diluted earnings from SEC filings. Rolled earnings per share are approximate because share counts can change between periods. Both appear only when the SEC data carries its date, so they are estimates at one price date, not synchronized filing valuations. Not investment advice.
