Black Forest Labs releases FLUX 3 Image Klein with free commercial use for small businesses

The German AI lab's new 5.6 billion parameter image model runs on consumer GPUs and costs nothing for teams earning under $5 million a year

Black Forest Labs just made a high-end image generator free for a large slice of the business world. The German AI research lab launched FLUX 3 Image Klein on October 15, 2026, and released the model weights alongside it.

The catch is a revenue ceiling. Businesses and individuals pulling in less than $5 million annually can use it commercially at no cost. Everyone above that line has to pay.

What FLUX 3 Image Klein actually does

FLUX 3 Image Klein is a text-to-image and image editing model with 5.6 billion parameters. BFL says Klein carries 38% fewer parameters than its predecessor, the FLUX.2 klein 9B variant.

The model supports up to 10 image references at once, which lets users feed it several source images to guide a single output. It also offers bounding-box layout control, allowing users to draw boxes to tell the model where specific elements should land in the frame. Outputs reach native resolution of up to 4K.

Built to run on hardware people already own

BFL is releasing Klein in several flavors. Base models are aimed at developers who want to fine-tune the system on their own data. Distilled versions are tuned for low latency. Quantized variants are available in FP8, INT8, and NVFP4 formats, targeting consumer GPUs with a minimum of 8 GB of VRAM.

Klein is available on Hugging Face and GitHub, and it plugs into popular inference frameworks including ComfyUI and Diffusers. It is also accessible through the BFL API.

The benchmark claims

BFL says internal testing shows Klein outperforming larger open-weight models, including Qwen-Image 2.1. The lab also claims it beats some closed models, naming Ideogram V4.5 among them.

How the licensing works

Klein ships under the FLUX Kommunity License. Teams with annual revenue under $5 million get free commercial use. Larger organizations can pursue self-hosted licensing or opt for the paid API to unlock extended capability.
